This is the second ZX3 to have entered my collection. It differs physically from my other example as it features a white canopy, rather than the black one. It is also undrilled for switching controls, as it was likely part of a group-switched section of street lighting when in service.
The lantern features a flat-glass lens to complete the Sealsafe optic.
As is typical with the ZX2/ZX3, the gear-tray can be accessed via two clips at the rear of the canopy.
The ZX3 has had to be glued at its front-end due to a small amount of damage.
Inside is quite a unique set-up. There's a dormant Urbis magnetic ballast for 150W SON lamps, and then a 150W Philips electronic driver stuffed to the side. The writing on the driver confirms this runs on Dim profile B: 100% from switch on - 20:00, 50% from 20:00 - 06:00, 100% from 06:00 - switch off.
It could be that the ignitor was faulty on the old gear, or it could be that the driver was implemented in order for dimming to be applied to the lantern.
The retired ballast has a date-code which points to August 1997. I will likely end up removing and testing the old gear for use in other lanterns that need it.
The lantern was powered up on its electronic Philips driver:
