Thorn Gamma 5 Lantern Installations

This lantern originally dates from 1960, where it was sold under the Atlas brand name. They were small, UFO-shaped post-top lanterns for group "B" lighting, that could run: 100W-200W GLS, or 80W-125W MBF/U. The lamp sat vertically (base-down) in the base-casting, with the bowl and canopy having comprised the lantern's body. The bowl was reinforced as there were no internal structures which supported the canopy. These lanterns bore a strong resemblance to the Gamma 4, and were sold and advertised as the much smaller version of that lantern.

Derby

This example of an Atlas Gamma 5 is located in an electricity substation, off Slack Lane, Darley Abbey. It features a spigot built into the column which is an Abacus base-hinge.

Some very similar installations are present on another substation off Highfield Lane in Chaddesden. These are fitted with 80W MBF/U lamps, though I'm unsure if these sill operate at night.

Sutton Coldfield

A series of 5m columns exist down St. Peter's Close, with all having Gamma 5 lanterns installed on top. These lanterns run domestic LED GLS lamps nowadays.

Inside, the Gamma 5s are all fitted with dome-refractors, which orbit the lamp. The housing association appears to take great care of the lanterns, and their respective columns, as no damage was seen from the public road.
