Foster & Pullen Standard Lantern Installations
This was Foster & Pullen's Standard square gas lamp, and was sold with 3-4 burners. Inside the lantern were various "Staybrite" reflectors to help with light-distribution. In its heyday it was a very common sight, and still today when compared to other gas lantern types they are common, despite being very rare overall.
Derby
St John the Evangelist Church has two Foster & Pullen Standard gas lanterns that have since been converted to run electric GLS lamps. This first one is fitted with a standard LED golf ball lamp.
It is missing the white reflector.
They are both on fluted cast-iron columns.
The second lantern does have its reflector but it is broken.
This one is fitted with a domestic CFL lamp.
Nottingham
In Nottingham there exists an estate which is lit almost entirely by gas lighting, making it the largest residential estate in the UK to use gas lighting technology. These first ones are on Western Terrace. The first is fitted with four burners and the second with three (I think).
Here is another example on Western Terrace, with one of its mantles dimly glowing.
Most of the gas columns have a column number painted on somewhere near the base. This is column 49 on Tennis Drive.
The Standard lanterns follow the road along, this was the next example to be photographed.
Lamp No. 51:
Text on the column's base appears to read: "Humphrey's & Wyer LTD, Portland RD, Nottingham"
Lamp No. 43 on Tunnel Road:
This installation on adjacent Tattershall Drive was spotted with a glowing mantle:
A staircase between Park Valley and Park Terrace also is lit with numerous Foster & Pullen Standard lanterns.
Lamp No. 173:
All of the gas lanterns in this estate have "Lamplighters British Gas" stickers on or in them.
I took a close-up photo of the Newbridge timer within the lantern. It is actually an identical type to the timer I have in my collection.
On the lantern's top is a Foster & Pullen label.
Lamp No.174 was photographed further up the staircase:
This is an example with three burners.
