Philips MI57 Lantern Installations

Philips MI57s were the 70W SON version of the Philips MI50. They share the same bowl and canopy, with the only difference being an adapted gear-tray to better suit their 70W SON lamps. They usually are set to run SON-E lamps, but in rarer circumstances (due to re-lamp schemes) can sometimes be found running SON-T lamps.

Birmingham

There are a fair few MI57s still knocking about in Birmingham! Unfortunately not all of them are in good (or even acceptable) condition. The following example is located on Magdala Street, column 1.

This example runs a SON-T lamp, where it would have run a SON-E lamp originally.

Column 1 of nearby Clinton Street also boasts an MI57, this time without a bowl!

This was a good opportunity to capture the sticker. The "*1" on the sticker confirms the NEMA socket is original, and the radio-node was added at a later date.

Two more MI57s can be sighted along Shaw's Passage. There would have been a third one, but a WRTL 2600 occupies the column as a spot-replacement.

The first lantern on the road:

The second lantern is missing it's bowl, exposing the SON-T lamp within.

The "4B" on the sticker dates this lantern to February 1994. My guess is that IP54 rating is now void without the bowl!
