DW Windsor Excel 450 Lantern Installations
This is another one of DW Windsor's Optima range. The Excel is very, very similar to the Stratum; the only difference of note is that the Excel is slightly taller. The Excel is available in two sizes, the 450 (small) and 500 (large, documented separately). They were once sold as HID lanterns, with lamp-types including metal halide or high-pressure sodium, but nowadays these lamps have been superseded by LED technology - and the Excel has been adapted to use such a light source. These versions could have LED boards populated with 16, 32 or 64 LEDs.
Birmingham
This day-burning 70W SON-T example of the Excel 450 is located in a park area off Farm Street.
The installations light the entirety of the park, minus one short stretch of WRTL 2600s.
Woodcock Street is home to a variety of heritage and amenity lanterns. A healthy mix can be seen in the image below:
The Excel is actually the one farthest-right on the twin-arm column. These lanterns run 100W SON-T lamps.
A number of green Excel 450s are installed on (also green) Abacus 6m base-hinged columns along Ruddington Way.
Another Excel 450 located along the same pathway:
These are all fitted with radio-node cells, as is typical with Birmingham PFI lanterns.
the Excel 450s continue to line the pathway:
The standard black and silver design was spotted in a park area around Wheeler Street. A SON-E (or perhaps SON-I) lamp is present inside of this example.
Some of these Excel 450s have had LED cob lamps stuffed into the optic compartment - I'm surprised such a bulky lamp fits within the reflectors...
That is, until you realise that the lamp partially sits above the white tray!
The next column along featured a lantern with an EOL lamp.
