Thorn Alpha 2000 Lantern Installations
The Thorn Alpha 2000 was most-common in France, but examples did spill-over to the UK. They were very heavy due to their aluminium composition, designed for 250W and 400W SON lamps. Post-top and side-entry mounting options were available, along with a choice of flat-glass, curved-tempered glass, or deep-glass bowls.
Birmingham
This rare white-canopied Alpha 2000 was spotted on column 53 of the B4135, having been installed with the new column a few years ago.
It runs a Philips Master CityWhite lamp, possibly 150W.
Derby Southern Bypass
These examples line the Derby Southern Bypass, running 250W SON respectively.
Another example (column BL151) along the Derby Southern Bypass. The ones here are all on single-arm 12m columns. The 250W SON lamp is just-about visible through the bowl.
Thank you to AgentHalogen_87 for providing the following images after a data-loss.
This Alpha 2000 was located on a derelict roundabout (converted to a footpath) off London Road.
This example was vandalised, exposing the lamp within. An attempt to rescue this lantern was made by another collector, but with the lantern having to be hammered off the column, not much was left to save. Rather hilariously, an ASD Highway Diamond Micro was put up there.
