Thorn Beta 4 Lantern Installations

The Thorn Beta 4 was a top-entry lantern designed for use with 60W-200W GLS or 80W-125W MBF/U lamps. The lantern's small size meant there was no room for a gear (or really anything other than the lamp). Nowadays these are extremely rare, and only a few remain. Most of the ones that remain are privately owned. These were also sold as the AEI Kirby for tungsten and mercury lamps.

Birmingham

On Egerton Road, next to the gates to Sorrel Park is a Thorn Beta 4 (or what's left of it) for MBF lamps.

The lantern has lost nearly all of it's bowl; only the hinge part remains. It appears to be polycarbonate, much like my own Beta 4.

Inside are the remains of an MBF lamp - perhaps 80W. The reflector has become ineffective as a consequence of corrosion, but this is not an issue as the installation is long-abandoned.

The column it sits atop is a 5m Thorn triangular-based column.

Long Eaton

A Thorn Beta 4 on a 5m cast-iron column exists in the White Lion's pub garden. The column houses a (slightly wonky) swan-neck bracket.

The lantern runs an LED GLS lamp, but may have ran a 100W GLS lamp originally.
