SUGG Windsor Gas Lantern Installations
Introduced in 1898, the Windsor lamp by William SUGG was the first lantern to be specifically designed for use with a gas mantle burner (rather than open flame). It's name was likely derived from the Royal Borough of Windsor on Thames - the location where it was first used. This timeless classic is still in production today in 2025 - over 126 years since its design. The modern versions are available in electric and gas forms, with this page documenting just the gas types. They are available in five sizes: 23cm (Garden), 30.5cm (Drive), 35.6cm (Small), 42cm (Medium), and 47cm (Large). They can feature glass panels, with clear, etched or opal finishes - completing the lantern with an IP54 rating.
London
This is one of hundreds of gas Windsors to be littered around London, with this specific one being positioned aside the pathways around Hyde Park.
Here is another similar example featuring four burners. It is located in The Green Park.
Many of the gas Windsors around here are fitted with Horstmann Newbridge time clocks.
The following set were photographed around Pall Mall.
This one is fitted with four burners again: I found the SUGG logo on the door's glass panel.
