Portland Lighting Charles Banded Lantern Installations
Portland Lighting manufactures a range of stylish lights for outdoor use. One of these lights is the Globe range of luminaires. The Charles is the largest (46cm width) globe they produce, and is available in plain (documented separately) or banded appearance. The spigot section is made from diecast aluminium, finished in a black polyester powder-coat, with stainless steel fastenings around an opal polycarbonate globe. Inside is an Edison screw lamp-holder, with the option of 7W LED.
Llandudno
The Charles Banded by Portland Lighting is used on Llandudno Pier. They are believed to run LED golf ball lamps nowadays. We first pictured them from a distance.
The first set are situated on ~4m Mike Smith Designs columns.
The lanterns themselves are equipped with anti-bird spikes, a sight which is common around seaside areas.
Look very closely at the photograph below. Notice anything off?
The first globes are fine...
But one of the ones in the distance is hanging on by a thread!
The damaged light appears to be cable-tied to the column to prevent it falling, but with such high wind at the time we visited, I don't think I'd trust the tie to keep the lantern held up.
The globes following the damaged one look a bit odd. What I imagine happened here is a series of globes became damaged, and replacements were ordered, but for the smaller 30cm "Churchill" globe.
Some of this one's anti-bird spikes seem to have fallen off.
As have many of this one's!
