Phosco P170 Lantern Installations

The Phosco (or Phosware) P170 was also sold as the "Chine" lantern. Uniquely, as well as post-top, they could be sold with a wall-bracket. Lanterns could accommodate lamps of: 60W-150W GLS, 80W or 125W MBF/U (3-pin B.C.) or 50W, 80W or 125W MBF/U (ES), or 50W, 70W or 110W SON. These lanterns were remote-geared only, featured an IP54 ingress protection rating, and weighed 5.5Kg. The (originally already uncommon) P170 is a very rare gem nowadays, as replacement schemes have lead to their numbers dwindling.

These pictures showcase some of the wall-mounted examples. They are located on the site of KidsBank, Garden Lane.

A smashed example on the corner of the building reveals that (at least this one) has had its lamp removed.

Inside is a 3-pin bayonet cap lamp-holder which confirms these examples would have run either 80W or 125W MBF/U.

The same lantern from the opposite side, showcasing a more complete view. The bowl and canopy look to have fallen to one side as the crack extends all the way around the spigot.

Here is the second example, and it has clearly had a much easier life than the first!
