Atlas Alpha 8 Lantern Installations

These enormous lanterns were originally designed to run two 400W MBF/U lamps, but could also often be found running tubular SON lamps. The inclusion of two lamps in this configuration makes the light source appear linear, ensuring even road brightness. The body of the lantern is composed of LM6 aluminium alloy, with a sealed clear plastic bowl. Access to both lamps is gained via a hatch on the top of the lantern, which both lamp-holders are attached to.

London

A single Atlas Alpha 8 lantern is installed near Marble Arch, London, on Constitution Hill. It is the only remaining example of the lighting scheme which would have involved the twin-lamp Alpha Eight in this area.

Two 400W lamps would have been installed in this lantern, but it appears only one remains intact, albeit now on the outside!

The two reflectors are clearly visible with the backlight from the sky, as is the Royce Thompson NEMA cell.

A large amount of dirt has gathered in the bowl, as a result of the hatch opening.

Two doors are present on the column, one for each 400W lamp. This installation dated from the 1960s, and the 17911 plate fastened to the column could be the original column number.
