Abacus AM490 Lantern Installations
The AM490 was one of the most iconic area lanterns in the UK. It is no longer produced, but thanks to its distinctive cubic shape, it was (and still is) easily recognisable. They often ran high-pressure sodium or metal halide lamps. The lamp would sit vertically with the base facing down near the spigot section. Light distribution was provided by an aluminium reflector inside. This lantern was also sold as the Veelite Supralite.
Nottingham
An Abacus AM490 was spotted in Nottingham on a leaden autumn day in 2025. It is located on a site off Bull Close Road. I'd imagine given the small diameter of column towards it that the lantern has some sort of adaptor inside its spigot.
Stafford
A site off Tollgate Drive has Abacus AM490s mounted on ~10m columns.
