Atlas Gamma 8 Lantern Installations

The Atlas Gamma Eight post-top was also known as the AEI Ashby. They could run either: 60W-200W GLS or 80W-125W MB/U and MBF/U. They were not widely-used when they were available for purchase, so nowadays very few are still extant, and the ones that are have almost certainly been forgotten about.

This Atlas Gamma Eight is present on the splitter island between the entrance to the Apollo Buckingham Health Science Campus. It is presumably used as a refuge beacon, given that another Gamma Eight occupied the opposite splitter island until around 2020, where it was swapped for a modern refuge beacon.

The Gamma 8 sits atop a newer column, so it has likely been re-used. Due to it's refuge beacon status, it likely runs a GLS lamp, perhaps an LED retrofit if it is still in service.

The lantern has dodged vandalism for several decades as of 2025, and the bowl and body remain intact!
